How to Prepare for your Graduation Session: Tips for Undergrads + Graduate Students
Graduation season is upon us, and it's time to capture this incredible milestone with a photo session that reflects all your hard work and achievements. Whether you’re gearing up for a solo shoot or planning a group session with your friends, here are some tips to help you prepare for an unforgettable graduation photoshoot.
1. Choose Your Outfits
First things first – let's talk outfits! Your graduation session is a great opportunity to showcase your personality. Here’s what to consider:
Cap and Gown: Of course, you’ll want to get some classic shots in your cap and gown (and possibly hood and stole!). Make sure your gown is wrinkle-free, and your cap fits comfortably. Pro-tip: Bring bobby pins if you plan to wear your hat for the entire session.
Personal Style: Wear an outfit under your grad attire that represents your personal style. Whether it’s a casual look with jeans and a favorite tee or something more formal like a dress or suit, wear what makes you feel confident.
School Spirit: Feel free to incorporate some school spirit into your session with a college t-shirt or hoodie. It’s a fun way to celebrate your alma mater!
2. Location, Location, Location
Choosing the right location can make a huge difference in your photos. Think about places that are meaningful to you or spots that represent your college experience:
Campus Landmarks: Iconic campus spots like the main quad, library steps, or a favorite study spot can provide a great backdrop.
Nature Scenes: Parks, gardens, or any green spaces on or near campus can add a touch of natural beauty to your photos.
Urban Vibes: If your school is in a city, consider incorporating some urban elements like brick walls, murals, or cityscapes.
3. Posing and Expressions
Don’t worry if you’re not a professional model – your photographer will guide you through poses. Here are some tips to keep in mind:
Relax and Have Fun: The best photos often come from natural, candid moments. Don’t be afraid to laugh, smile, and be yourself. You don’t have to always look at the camera, and I encourage you to embrace all of the moods you feel on your session day.
Mix It Up: Try a variety of poses, from standing and sitting to action shots like walking or tossing your cap in the air.
Bottle Pop! While I don’t advise bringing any extra props, since your cap and gown is already a lot to work with, you can always bring a bottle of champagne to pop during your session!
4. Timing and Lighting
The time of day can impact the quality of your photos:
Golden Hour: Early morning or late afternoon offers soft, flattering light known as the golden hour. It’s perfect for capturing that warm, glowing look.
Midday: If you’re shooting midday, look for shaded areas to avoid harsh shadows.
Wrapping It Up
Your graduation session is a chance to celebrate your achievements and capture the essence of your college journey. With a little preparation and a lot of enthusiasm, you’ll have a collection of photos that you’ll cherish for years to come.
Congratulations to the class of 2025-2026! I can’t wait to capture your special moment.
